Residence permit as an asylum seeker or recognised refugee
General information
To have the residence permit issued, you need to have gone through the asylum procedure at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees and have an official notice with recognition of the asylum or refugee status. The official notice is only valid for the persons named in it. Relatives of the person named above, who are already in Germany and have not gone through an asylum procedure, can apply for a residence permit for family reasons.

Documents/ forms to be submitted
- Application form (see below) for every person submitting an application
- Application form for travel ID document for refugees (see below)
- An official notice from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (copy) - only for the first issue or when the protection status has changed
- for children under the age of six: a current biometric passport photo
Process and procedure
Please submit your application and the relevant documents by post. After the decision about your application, you will be invited to have your biometric data recorded.
Costs and fees
The residence permit is issued free of charge.
The following fees apply for the issuing of a travel ID document to refugees:
- Travel ID document for refugees from the age of 24 years: 60 euros
- Travel ID document for refugees up to the age of 24 years: 38 euros
- Provisional travel ID document for children up to the age of 12 years: 14 euros
Payment possibilities:

- Paying by EC card
Paying by credit card is possible.
