Marriage and entering into a civil partnership
A marriage/civil partnership should always be registered with the Registry Office at which either of the parties has his/her principal or secondary residence.
If you are not a resident of Leipzig and wish to register your marriage/civil partnership in Leipzig, the Registry Office at your place of residence is responsible for registration.
The documents will be forwarded to us, and on receipt of your registration papers a date can be arranged for your marriage/civil partnerhip ceremony.
Registering a marriage/civil partnership
A marriage/civil partnership must be registered with the marriage registrar at the Registry Office.
Consultation hours for registration
Monday: 09:00 - 12:00 hours
Tuesday: 09:00 - 12:00 hours and 13:00 - 18:00 hours
Thursday: 13:00 - 16:00 hours
You can make an appointment for registation by calling 0341 123-4133. Please bring all the necessary documents to the registrar's office on this date, as well as funds sufficient to cover the fees payable.
Registration is only possible without making an appointment in advance if you are both German citizens and were born in Germany.
If you wish to register a marriage or civil partnership without making an appointment in advance, please go to room 50 of the Registry Office in the Town Hall.
Please note that if you show up without having made an appointment in advance, registration in room 50 must be completed no later than half an hour before the end of consultation hours.
When you register a marriage or civil partnership, the documents you have presented will be used to verify whether you are eligible to marry or enter into a civil partnership.
Validity of registration
Registrations are valid for six months, i.e. if you want to marry on 30th October, you can register on 30th April at the earliest. It is not possible to pre-register or make advance reservations for a marriage or civil partnership ceremony.
Required documents / forms
If one or both persons wishing to marry or enter into a civil partnership is a foreign citizen or was not born in Germany, a consulation appointment must generally be arranged and all documents required to register the marriage/civil partnership must be presented.
If both parties to the marriage or civil partnership are German citizens, born in Germany and single (never previously married or partnered), then the following documents are required:
A valid identity card or passport
Certification of residence from the citizens' bureau or registration office of the principal place of residence (this must not date back more than 14 days at the time of registration of the marriage/civil partnership)
If the Leipzig Registry Office is responsible for registration on the basis of secondary residence, additional certification of residence from the citizens' bureau or registration office of the secondary place of residence, Leipzig, must be presented
Attested copy of the birth registration document (not a birth certificate), obtainable from the Registry Office of your place of birth
Birth certificates for joint children born before the marriage of both parents or birth certificate and acknowledgement of paternity
Signed letter of authorisation to register the marriage if persons wishing to marry or enter into a civil partnership cannot be present at the Registry Office for registration purposes
If one of you has already been married or partnered, the following documents will also be required:
Divorced
Marriage certificate from the last marriage and legally binding divorce decree or legally binding court ruling on the divorce (a divorce abroad is subject to special recognition)
Civil partnership dissolved
Certificate of civil partnership pertaining to previous civil partnership and legally binding resolution of dissolution of the civil partnership or death certificate of the civil partner
Widowed
- Spouse's marriage certificate and death certificate
