Leipzig Interreligious Round Table
How was the Leipzig Interreligious Round Table created?
The idea of an Interreligious Round Table (IRT) developed over a relatively lengthy period. Additional momentum also came from the “Do you know who I am?” project organised nationwide by the umbrella associations of Christians, Muslims and Jews. At a meeting with the Chairman of the City Ecumenical Circle of Christian Churches in Leipzig in November 2005, the idea proposed by the Integration Officer was welcomed and further details discussed. The potential participants were also agreed with him and two preliminary meetings held with them, in January and May 2006, before the Round Table was then set up on 22 June 2006.
What does the Interreligious Round Table want and what does it not want?
The IRT aims to take proposals into the relevant communities, strengthen existing initiatives, support opportunities to get to know each other and share ideas on topics of mutual interest, and to implement joint projects. At the Round Table, there are no discussions of religious beliefs - these remain the remit of the religious communities.
How does the Interreligious Round Table work and who belongs to it?
The Round Table meets twice per year in the City Hall. The members of the IRT are leading representatives of the Protestant, Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox Churches, the Jewish, Muslim and Vietnamese Buddhist communities and the Bahá'í. Representatives of other religious communities also often attend as guests. The City Integration Officer acts as a co-ordinator and moderator at the Round Table and his services are gladly welcomed by the participants.
