Peace Prayers
As early as 1982 peace activists, environmental campaigners and human rights groups began to organise regular prayers for peace at St Nicholas Church, which was the starting point for the Monday Demonstrations in September 1989. After Monday prayers on 9 October 1989 more than 70,000 people assembled here in order to demonstrate. In commemoration, the traditional Prayer for Peace is held annually on 9 October
The sermon on the twentieth anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution was preached by retired bishop Dr. Christoph Kähler. The theme of the sermon was "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." Jürgen Wolf conducted the Bach Choir of St Nicholas Church in the premiere performance of a cantata for mixed choir, string trio, bassoon and organ composed by Enjott Schneider and entitled "Die Seligpreisungen - in memoriam Leipzig 1989" ("The beatitudes - in memoriam Leipzig 1989").
