The Moritz Bastion (Moritzbastei)
The Moritz Bastion was built between 1551 and 1554, and is named after Moritz, Elector of Saxony. The former fortification next to the University is the only preserved part of the medieval city fortification. From 1796 to 1834, there was the first undenominational citizen school.
During World War II, the school was destroyed, and the debris ended up in the vaulted cellars. In 1974, ownership of the bastion was transferred to the students of the university, who removed over 40,000 cubic metres (1,412,587 cubic feet) of rubble and, in 1982, opened a student club.
Since 1993, the company, Moritzbastei Betriebs GmbH, has operated the Moritz Bastion as a cultural centre and cafe. Theatre productions, films and dance events are regularly held there.
