Jogging and walking
Hiking, walking or jogging - they all have a long tradition in Leipzig. The first Marathon to take place in Germany was hosted in Leipzig on 5th September 1897. At the time only participants from Leipzig were allowed to enter - but that was then. Today a large number of walking enthusiasts make use of the paths in Leipzig's green spaces - and there are plenty of them.
Particularly attractive and healthy is walking in one of the many parks of the city or in the Auenwald floodplain forest. In the evenings and at weekends the paths in Clara Zetkin Park and Johanna Park are highly popular among runners and walkers, due to their proximity to the city centre and attractive surrounding residential areas.
If you want to take your running more seriously, you can participate at the Leipzig Marathon which is taking place every year. Runners, skaters and walkers can choose out of different categories to compare their skills with others.
Telekom Running Track
Anton Bruckner Allee, as a central thoroughfare in Clara Zetkin Park, is the centre of these activities. The Centre for Health and Sport of BSV AOK Leipzig e.V. is also the start of the 3 kilometres long, clearly signposted Telekom Running Track, which was inaugurated on 01.09.2011.
This running track offers a number of advantages:
parking facilities
access by public transport
good lighting
signposts showing directions and route lengths
catering and toilet facilities
Müllermilch fitness course
Northern and Southern Auenwald woods and Cospuden Lake
The northern Auenwald woods with the Auensee lake have clearly marked routes for runners and are also very popular venues for training and competitions.
In the southern Auenwald woods, between Schleußiger Weg and Brückenstraße, runners will find ideal tracks through Leipzig's unique floodplain landscape. For ambitious runners the "Fockeberg" hill is also a popular part of the course.
Those runners for whom the route in the southern Auenwald isn't long enough, can cross the Brückenstraße and continue their run in the Cospuden Lake recreational area.
