Hiking, walking or jogging – they all have a long tradition in Leipzig. Plenty of green areas and parks in Leipzig give the oppertunity to do some workout out of fitness centres or gyms. As a special event, there is the Leipzig Marathon with thousands of participants every year.

Leipzig offers a large number of opportunities for water sports enthusiasts, including Canoeing, Rowing, Sailing and surfing. Leipzig's beautiful lakes are attractive locations for recreation and sports.
The best vehicle to discover Leipzig is the bicycle. Today there are more than 400 kilometres of cycle paths all around the city. Compared to 1989, the bicycle traffic has doubled. Since 2011 the City of Leipzig started to install specific cycle roads, which can exclusively be used by cyclists. Throughout the city bicycle stands are installed, to which bicycles can be locked.
In the area of Leipzig are plenty possibilities for inline skaters. The city offers some courses for example around the Clara-Zetkin-Park, the Lake Cospuden and the New Fair exhibition center. In the year 2013 the German Inline Skate Half Marathon Championships were held in Leipzig.
Rock climbers can enjoy lots of natural climbing opportunities in the immediate surroundings of Leipzig, with the quarries near Brandis/Beucha and the Hohburger Berge, both to the north-east of the city, as popular destinations. However, there are also climbing facilities within Leipzig.
Even though the flatland doesn't offer many such days, on those occasions when enough snow falls cross-country skiing trails are quickly established and many local people take advantage of them. The preferred trails lead through the parks, the floodplain woods and along the waterways.
