In the words of Deputy Mayor for Culture Dr. Skadi Jennicke: "With Tobias Wolff the city of Leipzig gains a director with artistic and commercial vision, an international reputation and strong ideas about ways of opening up the opera's programme to a developing metropolitan region."

Mr. Wolff was chosen by a committee as the most suitable candidate to emerge from the selection process. The committee consisted of representatives of the city council and municipal administration and received advisory support from Dominique Meyer (Director of Vienna State Opera), Dietmar Schwarz (Director General of the Deutsche Oper Berlin), Evamaria Wieser (Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival), Dr. Eleonore Büning (former arts editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and chair of the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik) and Michael Schröder (Deputy Managing Director of the German Theatre and Orchestra Association).
The dramaturge, music journalist and cultural manager Tobias Wolff has been Managing Director of the Göttingen International Handel Festival since 2011 and will remain so until May 2021. The festival, which celebrates its centenary in 2020, has received numerous international accolades and awards under his stewardship. Tobias Wolff was born in 1975 in Koblenz and studied music and viola in Cambridge, Essen and Düsseldorf as well as International Management (MBA) at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management.
Leipzig Opera is the third oldest opera house in Europe, cultivating a tradition going back for 325 years. It sees itself as being open for all citizens.
