The overall plan for the growth of our city in the 21st century has now been established: the updated zoning plan for the city of Leipzig comes into effect with the official announcement in Leipzig Gazette No. 10/2015.
The zoning plan in particular specifies the extent of the areas that have to be kept available for housing, social infrastructure, commerce, local amenities and traffic. Given the fact that since 2010 Leipzig has been growing by around 10,000 inhabitants a year, the current plan provides sufficient housing land for 600,000 inhabitants and - among other facilities - areas for possible new school buildings.
Focus on the inner city
Land is, for example, available in the area south of Bayerischer Bahnhof, where it will be possible to create a lively new urban district, whose centrepiece will be a green corridor from the city centre to the southern outskirts.
Other available land is located to the west and north of the main station. For commercial development large areas have been identified on the outskirts of the city which are especially suitable for the requirements of manufacturing industry. The ecological basis of the zoning plan is represented by the city's landscape plan. This contains important information about the quality of the available land and the objectives for the development of the various types of open space. At the same time it also shows where the local situation is coming under considerable pressure from urban congestion and development levels.
