After the decision in Rome, Leipzig lord mayor Burkhard Jung explained: "I am convinced that in 2017 we will have a Fencing World Championship in the Leipzig Arena, which will remain in the memories of the entire audience and the athletes. With this successful application, we set up a high expectation on ourselves - and we have to fulfil them now."
During the Federation Internationale D'Escrime (FIE) annual meeting 2014 in Rome, Leipzig was elected to organize the World Championship. 109 of 115 delegates voted for Leipzig, after Doha (Katar) withdrew its candidature.
The organization of the Fencing World Championship 2017 reflects the long tradition of international Fencing Championships in Leipzig - which was influenced by the World Championship tradition of more than 25 years. The decision for Leipzig will also support the Leipzig Fencing Club and the development of the junior sports base in Leipzig.
The next Fencing World Championship will take place in 2015 in Moscow.
